Camera makers focus on bad chip
Newspaper says manufacturers offer to repair a faulty chip in digital cameras and other goods.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Some of the biggest electronics manufacturers say they will repair a defective chip found on more than 80 models of digital cameras and other digital devices, but only if the chip becomes faulty, according to a report published Thursday.

While no official recall has been announced by any of the companies, they are offering to repair products affected by the chip, according to an article in Thursday's Wall Street Journal.

The paper reported that the chip, which is integral in capturing light for pictures, was installed in an unknown number of cameras, camcorders and hand-held devices produced by such firms as Canon Inc., Sony Corp., Nikon Corp., Olympus Corp. and Fuji Photo Film Co. over the past three years.

Sony, which the paper says is the maker of the disputed chip, told the Journal it stopped producing the component in March 2004.

The electronics makers have not issued a recall, and they have stated on their Web sites that they will fix the device only if a customer complains about it, a move the auto industry considers a silent recall, the paper reported.

A camera with a faulty chip will display color distortion on the LCD viewer or no images at all when printing or viewing the picture digitally, according to the paper. The chip has a tendency to fail in hot or humid environments.
