Report: Jordan items to aid Katrina relief
Retired basketball superstar's autographed items to be auctioned include the entire line of Air Jordans and a Chicago Bulls jersey, newspaper says.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Michael Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to six National Basketball Association championships, will auction off autographed memorabilia to raise money for Katrina relief efforts, according to a published report. USA Today reports that among the Jordan items to be auctioned are a complete set of Air Jordans -- all 21 pairs of the popular sneakers ever made by Nike (Research) — from the first released in 1985 to the AJXXIs, which hit stores for the first time Saturday. Also being sold are personal memorabilia, including an autographed Bulls jersey, an autographed set of his popular Wingspan posters and a basketball, the newspaper says. A silent auction will be held in Houston, site of Sunday's NBA All-Star game, as part of the weekend's slate of activities. The top bid in the silent auction will be the starting point Tuesday for bids on eBay (Research), the newspaper reports. "A lot of people stepped up, made some sacrifices and helped out (the Katrina victims)," Jordan told the newspaper. "But man, the way society is, we move on to the next issues so quickly. It's left up to us to maintain it, to keep the ball rolling in the right direction... They still need help. It's not like it's just over and done with." Many Katrina victims were evacuated to Houston in the aftermath of the hurricane, and many are still living in the city and the surrounding region. Proceeds will go to the Habitat for Humanity for Hurricane Katrina relief fund, the newspaper reports. _______________ For more business news involving celebrities, click here. |
