Spielberg, Burnett team up in primetime
Golden guys of movies, TV will join forces on new show that's one part 'Project Greenlight' and one part 'American Idol.'

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Film director Steven Spielberg and TV producer Mark Burnett are teaming up on a new series due in the summer of 2007, according to a news report Friday.

The FOX show, "On the Lot," will combine elements of "Project Greenlight" and "American Idol," USA Today said. Sixteen aspiring filmmakers will compete for a development deal at DreamWorks (Research), and the winner will get the chance to produce his or her own movie.

Each week, teams of four will produce a short film in a specific genre, such as romance, sci-fi or horror, which one team member will direct. As on "American Idol," a panel of judges will weigh in during a live screening episode on a movie theater-style set, according to the newspaper.

Viewers will vote to eliminate the losing film's director in a results show the next night, the newspaper said.
