E-filing trumps paper in filing tax returns
Maybe the post-office tax rush won't be so bad after all.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – If there's one thing you can count on in tax season it's the throngs of 11th hour procrastinators. But the one thing you may not be able to count on this year is that they'll all show up and wait in long lines at the post office until 11:59 p.m. on April 17 (or on April 18 in some states – to see why, click here). That's because for the second year in a row, a majority of taxpayers have been electronically filing their returns rather than going the pen-and-paper route. As of April 7, roughly 66 percent of the 87.7 million returns filed so far were e-filed. There IRS is still expecting another 46 million returns to be filed before the final deadline. If yours is among them, and you don't think you'll be able to make the deadline, you can always e-file your request for an automatic 6-month extension by filing Form 4868, Automatic Extension of Time to File. Or ... you could mail it in. |
