3 stocks: Oil's hot and cars are not
Look at Halliburton and Schlumberger and feel the glow ... but when it comes to GM, just say "no."

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Teflon stocks. China's President Hu gets heckled and the FDA says medical marijuana doesn't work. It's all connected baby. What a way to start a weekend!

HALLIBURTON: In defense of ... this is an amazing success story! Stock has gone up from $9 to over $82 since 2002 (It was at $49 in 2001). Folks, this is America. If the company isn't closed down or bankrupt, you can buy the stock and get rich. Earnings are good. KBR is going public and there are friends in the White House. What more could you want? What if you bought the stock (Research) now and sold it right before the 2008 election? Betcha it works!

GM: So strange that losing over $300 million is considered good news. And, did you see GM's fleet sales? Very high. That's not good. Company had all sorts of new bells, whistles and slides to present its financial information. So what's the prognosis? I still say it's 50/50 that this company goes bankrupt. Key is Delphi. Strike there could kill. I know the stoc (Research)k went up some 10 percent yesterday, but I just think there are better places to play ... Meanwhile Ford (Research) loses over a billion bucks. Pity.

SCHLUMBERGER: (No, it's not pronounced like 'hamburger.') Yes this company (Research) is the same business as HAL, and it's also a big winner. (I'm just trying to get you out of the Intel/Cisco/GE mindset!!!) Earnings announced this morning: up nicely and they made a big acquisition. This is the business you want to be in right now. Note: Some 20 percent of oil production is still off-line in the Gulf of Mexico ... As Beck would say, "Where it's At."

Loose Change: Question. Do you think that people who wear Bluetooth do-dads around all the time are tacky? ... Mike sent me this: "What's up with Dublin, OH? Cardinal Health (FORTUNE rank 19) and Wendy's (FORTUNE rank 516), both based in that fair city, both changed CEOs on the same day, April 17." Coincidence? OR NOT... And this from reader Deep Blue: "This year's market: Feels like 1975 ... Acts like 1988 ... Trades like 1999 ... going to end up like??" Top of page
