Kids moving home after school? Survey says, charge rent
A recent poll shows strict views on grads who move back home.
NEW YORK (MONEY) - According to a recent Money Magazine/ICR poll, the majority of Americans (56 percent) feel parents of recent college graduates should charge rent to their children who decide to move back home after graduation. How long should Mom and Dad expect to collect? The poll, which surveyed 1,010 Americans, found three-in-five Americans (60 percent) feel up to one year is a reasonable amount of time for a recent college grad to move home and live with their parents before finding a place of their own. However, Americans living in the West (23 percent), men (22 percent), and those with only a high school degree or less (21 percent) were less likely to sympathize, saying that recent graduates should not move back home at all. Americans who are themselves college graduates (87 percent), women (85 percent), and those with children in their household (84 percent with children under age 18) disagreed, indicating any amount of time is suitable. Southerners want faster turnaround, as more (14 percent) felt one month or less was an appropriate amount of time for recent graduate to live at home before moving out on their own. That was the case for only 3 percent in the Northeast, who thought that 16 months for recent grads to move on their own is reasonable. The Money/ICR poll was conducted by telephone with a nationally representative sample of 1,010 Americans from March 15th to 19th, 2006. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.08 percentage points.
