NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Leaf peepers, start your engines. As the sugar maple, elm, oak, and birch transform themselves into stark, raving beauties, millions of tourists are descending upon the Northeast to watch the changing hues.

If you've always wanted to experience those picture perfect scenarios for yourself, it's not too late. But you need to get going.

In addition to being New England's most beautiful season, autumn is also its most fleeting.

To really get into the spirit of the season, we recommend staying in a Bed & Breakfast instead of a hotel.

To find the best, we scoured the northeastern countryside for places that feel both luxurious and homey. Here are six on the high-end, along with suggestions of places to go and things to do while you're in the area.
