Star Trek auction prospers Sale of memorabilia from TV series, movies reaches $3.2 million, exceeding 3-day target, with one day to go. NEW YORK (CNN) -- Sales of Star Trek memorabilia at Christie's auction house are out of this world. The New York auction house has recorded $3.2 million in sales at the end of Friday, exceeding Christie's original figure of $3 million expected for the three-day auction which wraps up Saturday.
The auction kicked off in New York City on Thursday, just a month after the forty-year anniversary of Star Trek's TV debut. More than a thousand lots of official Star Trek contents from the archives of CBS (Charts) Paramount Television Studios were put up for sale. Bids are being accepted from the floor, by telephone and through "Christie's Live" online bidding channel. On Friday, a 2-foot Borg cube model with intricate black lattice work boldly went for $96,000. It's catalogued estimated worth was between $1,000 and $1,500. A captain's chair once belonging to Capt. Jean-Luc Picard from the bridge of the Starship Enterprise fetched $52,000 on Thursday, light-years beyond its estimated selling price of $9,000. A model of the Starship Enterprise-E fetched an out-of-this-world $120,000. Some of the other auction highlights include props, furniture, weapons and blueprints from both the television series and the motion pictures. Among high-demand items are the Star Trek costumes worn by all the original main characters: Capt. Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Lt. Uhura. The uniform worn by Kirk, played by William Shatner, in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" is estimated to fetch $6,000 to $8,000. Special-effects models are also in demand, including the miniature Starship Enterprise used in the visual effects for "Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country." It is estimated the miniature will fetch between $15,000 to $20,000. Christie's is privately held. Shares of its rival in the auction business, Sotheby's (Charts), closed lower Friday. -- from CNN's Brian Vitagliano; CNN's Mythili Rao contributed to this report _____________________ |
