PepsiCo's Indra Nooyi Named One of FORTUNE's 50 Most Powerful Women
(Fortune) -- Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo (Charts), ranks No. 1 on Fortune's 2006 list of 50 Most Powerful Women. Pepsi's brand-new chief (as of Oct. 1) is a powerful force behind the consumer giant's strong profit pipeline and $108 billion stock market valuation. Formerly CFO and president, the Indian-born strategist reached the top even though she never ran a line operation at Pepsi. Nooyi believes in constant reinvention: "The minute you've developed a new business model, it's extinct, because somebody is going to copy it." By the key criteria Fortune uses in assembling its annual list - the size, importance, and health of each business in the global economy, and the momentum of each woman's career (along with her social and cultural influence) - there's no question that the power of women in the corporate sphere is rising. Indeed, it could be called the year of the Most Powerful Woman CEO. The top seven positions on Fortune's 2006 Most Powerful Women list are held by CEOs. They include: Anne Mulcahy, Xerox (Charts); Meg Whitman, eBay (Charts); Pat Woertz, ADM (Charts); Irene Rosenfeld, Kraft Foods (Charts); Brenda Barnes, Sara Lee (Charts); and Andrea Jung, Avon (Charts).
