Smith Corporation (down $4.82 to $39.06, Charts) said its third quarter earnings rose but trimmed the high end of its earnings forecast, citing the weakening housing market. Chicago Mercantile Exchange (up $17.79 to $152.30, Charts) said it has agreed to acquire the rival exchange for $8 billion in cash and stock in a deal that combines the two largest futures exchanges in the United States. Callaway Golf Company (down $1.49 to $12.61, Charts) late Monday gave a quarterly forecast that was short of analysts' estimates. EMC Corporation's (Charts) net income slipped in the third quarter; the company cited higher costs. Intermune Inc (up $4.56 to $21.39, Charts) will work with Roche Holding AG to develop and commercialize hepatitis C treatments in a deal that also includes a 50-50 split of any U.S. profits from products that come out of the collaboration. JetBlue (up $0.55 to $10.71, Charts) was upgraded by Lehman Brothers to "overweight" from "equal-weight," according to Briefing.com. Johnson and Johnson's (up $1.56 to $66.49, Charts) profit soared based on better-than-expected sales of its products and consumer services. Lear Corporation (up $4.12 to $28.71, Charts) saw billionaire investor Carl Icahn more than triple his stake in the company by buying an additional $200 million in stock. Motorola (down $0.59 to $24.90, Charts) named Kenneth "Casey" Keller chief marketing officer effective Monday. Starbucks (down $0.36 to $38.04, Charts) announced a recall of 73,000 coffee brewers sold at its shops which pose fire hazards. |
