Serwer: Stay clear of Clear Channel The controlling family may benefit from a sale of the radio giant, but it's too late for other investors.
NEW YORK (Fortune) -- MARKETS: It's over. I say the Fall rally is kaputsky. Last week, we set a record every day but Friday. Friday was down. Monday will likely be down too after the weak GDP report and weak housing report late last week. Japan plunged too. Bye, bye. CLEAR CHANNEL: So it looks like the the private equity boys are going to take this one over. Interesting because the Mays family (they founded the company and hold sway over it) have always been dealmakers first and operators second. First they did a roll-up (of U.S. radio stations), which went spectacularly well. But they kind of met their match when they bought SFX, that big entertainment company from Robert Sillerman. Now the WSJ reports that the Mays family could reap a billion plus from a Clear Channel (Charts) buy-out. Not surprised. I would stay way from this one now. It's done. HUMANA: You know them, one of the nation's top health care providers. Humana (Charts) had gotten beaten up lower reimbursement for Medicare and generally higher costs, but ah, the empire fought back. It raised premiums and exited markets--not unlike home insurers in Florida. History? In 1961 a couple of Kentucky lawyers bought a nursing home as a real estate investment. Became a juggernaut in that biz, then hospitals, which it later exited (that biz became core of HCA.) HUM has been on a tear since 2003, and it is an expensive stock. Just reported earnings today which were a little light, but I like this company. Best of breed. COLLEGIATE PACIFIC: Okay, I'll be honest with you. The only reason I'm talking about this company is that its ticker is BOO. (And similar salutations of the season!) Company actually makes sporting goods for schools and institutions including: equipment for football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and other racquet sports. Also inflatable balls, nets, batting cages, scoreboards, bleachers, weight lifting equipment, standards, and goals. And fitness equipment, camping equipment, indoor recreational games, and outdoor playground equipment. WHEW! Okay look it makes football equipment and I LOVE FOOTBALL! Loose Change:So I read Michael Lewis' new book, The Blind Side. It really is a good read. Interesting to now follow the book's protagonist, Micahel Oher, as he wends his way through another lame-o Ole Miss season..... ___________________________ E-mail Andy Serwer at serwer@fortunemail.com and see him on CNN's "In the Money" and "American Morning." |
