YouTube named 'Invention of the Year'

Video-sharing Web site beats out Gardasil and CrustaStun to take top honors in 2006.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- YouTube, the video-sharing Web site, can now add "Invention of the Year" to its growing list of honors this year, Time magazine announced Monday.

The publication chose YouTube over inventions such as Merck's (Charts) Gardasil, a vaccine that prevents a cancer-causing sexually transmitted disease, and CrustaStun, a device that electrocutes a lobster in five seconds, and is touted as a humane alternative to boiling.

TECHNOLOGY

"Only YouTube created a new way for millions of people to entertain, educate, shock, rock and grok one another on a scale we've never seen before," Time magazine said in its Best Inventions 2006 report.

According to YouTube, which was recently acquired by Google (Charts) for $1.65 billion, more than 70 million videos are viewed by people on the site every day.

Time is owned by Time Warner, the parent company of CNNMoney.com.
