Gasoline prices gain 4 cents

Lundberg survey says averages up for four weeks straight, but slack winter demand should lead to stable prices.

CAMARILLO, Calif. (CNN) -- Gasoline prices at U.S. pumps rose an average of a four cents a gallon over the last two weeks, on top of a nickel average price hike measured in a previous survey two weeks earlier, according to a national survey released Sunday.

The Dec. 1 Lundberg Survey of about 5,000 gas stations across the country showed the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gas was $2.27, publisher Trilby Lundberg told CNN. The "modest" increase came despite plentiful stocks of crude oil and gasoline, she said.

Winter is typically a low-demand season for gasoline. So without a "severe bump" in demand, such as extreme cold weather increasing heating oil consumption, U.S. consumers should have "comparative stability" in prices in the weeks ahead, Lundberg said.

Before rising a nickel a gallon in the Nov. 17 survey, gas prices had fallen 84 cents in the previous 12 weeks.

The most expensive gasoline was in Honolulu, where drivers pay an average $2.74 a gallon, while Tulsa enjoys the cheapest gas at an average $2.09 a gallon, Lundberg said.

Prices in other cities:

Dallas: $2.15

Atlanta: $2.17

Salt Lake City: $2.22

Philadelphia: $2.30

Miami: $2.30

Hartford, Conn.: $2.33

Chicago: $2.38

Los Angeles: $2.41

Seattle: $2.54

Gasoline prices are down 5 percent for the year. But the AMEX oil and gas index, which includes such companies as ExxonMobil (Charts), BP (Charts), Chevron (Charts) and ConocoPhillips (Charts), is up 5 percent.
