Dell begins taking orders for Vista PCs

Computer-maker says it spent more than 100,000 engineer hours testing new operating system.


NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Dell announced Friday it will begin taking orders this weekend for computers loaded with Microsoft's Vista operating system.

It said the computers will give Windows users many more capabilities in digital entertainment.

Dell said it has spent more than 100,000 engineer hours testing the new operating system.

The initial roll-out of Vista-installed systems will be in English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese, with additional languages to follow in coming weeks.

Gateway said that it will be announcing new notebook and desktop products related to Vista next week.

Shares of Dell (Charts) closed Friday at $23.73 on Nasdaq.

Dell's stock has underperformed those of its competitors in the last year, falling 19 percent. IBM (Charts) is up 20.7 percent, HP (Charts) is up 31.9 percent, and Sun (Charts) is up 44.2 percent.
