Stocks struggle out of the gateMajor gauges open mixed as investors eye rally overseas, dip in jobless claims.NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks opened mixed Thursday as investors eyed rallies in markets in Europe and Asia and a dip in jobless claims in the United States. The Dow industrials were little changed while the Nasdaq composite index edged higher in the early going. The S&P 500 index was flat. Oil prices hovered near $60 a barrel in electronic trading. Weekly inventory figures are due about an hour after the market opens. Treasury bond prices fell, pushing the yield on the 10-year note to 4.72 percent from 4.69 percent late Wednesday. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions. Stocks in the news include Toll Brothers (Charts), J.C. Penney (Charts), Google (Charts), General Motors (Charts) and DaimlerChrysler (Charts). |
