Stocks tip-toe lowerWhether the Dow makes it nine up days in a row could depend on Bernanke's comments later today and oil prices after the weekly energy report.New York (CNNMoney.com) -- Wall Street edged higher in the first moments of trade Wednesday as investors mull economic worries, oil prices and wait for the latest Fed speak. The Dow barely ticked lower, the Nasdaq also edged down, while the S&P fell a bit. At 1 p.m. ET Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is due to speak at the Global Economic Policy Forum at New York University. Then at 2 p.m. the Federal Reserve will release the minutes of its most recent meeting. Oil prices hovered around $62 a barrel on Wednesday as the market waited for data expected to show a fall in U.S. gasoline stocks with demand growing into the busy summer months in the U.S., the world's top consumer. A poll of 1,373 adults conducted for the Los Angeles Times and financial news wire Bloomberg found that 60 percent of those surveyed said recession was somewhat or very likely within the next year, according to the Times report. |
