Wall St. heads down at the open

U.S. markets start lower, although not as sharply as originally feared, as credit crunch weighs.


NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wall Street was down to be sure, but not by as much as some premarket forecasts, as the credit crunch continued to damage investors' psyches.

The Dow Jones industrial average was 0.7 percent lower. The Nasdaq composite index was off by 0.8 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index slipped 0.6 percent.
