Selloff starts Wall St.'s dayU.S. stocks retreat as oil prices peak above $96 a barrel.NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stocks fell at Thursday's open as oil prices surged as high as $96 a barrel and investors began to fret about the upcoming October jobs report. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.9 percent, as did the Nasdaq composite index. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was off by 0.8 percent.
