NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stocks fell at Friday's open, with tech stocks especially hard hit, on renewed concerns about the U.S. economy in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 1.2 percent. The tech-laden Nasdaq composite index skidded 2.3 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was 1.5 percent lower.
