Techs in big open skidNasdaq tumbles 1.8% at open as investors fret about economic outlook.NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stocks fell at Friday's open, with tech stocks especially hard hit, on renewed concerns about the U.S. economy in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 1.2 percent. The tech-laden Nasdaq composite index skidded 2.3 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was 1.5 percent lower. Among stocks in the news Friday: Merck & Co (Charts, Fortune 500)., Clearwire (Charts), Wachovia (Charts, Fortune 500), BHP Billiton (Charts), Walt Disney (Charts, Fortune 500) and Estee Lauder (Charts, Fortune 500). |
