Google said to prep wireless spectrum bid

Report: Move reflects the company's big mobile phone ambitions.

LONDON (CNNMoney.com) -- Google is preparing to bid on a wireless spectrum, a move which could help the company roll out its own nationwide mobile network, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal said the company is getting ready to make a bid at a Federal Communications Commission auction in January. The offer could run $4.6 billion or more, the report said.

Google's (Charts, Fortune 500) moves into the mobile market have been closely watched. Earlier this month, the company formed an alliance with mobile phone manufacturers and carriers to create an open software platform for mobile phones. To top of page
