(FORTUNE Small Business) -- Dear FSB: I have a business on the side. Everything is done from my apartment. I use a computer and audio-editing software to produce commercials for radio stations, and send them via MP3 files. I work alone and have no employees. Do I need a business license for this type of operation?

- Tameka Kenan, North Charleston, S.C.

Dear Tameka: According to Anne Chapman, a representative of SC.gov, the official website of South Carolina, general business licensing is regulated at the city level. So, the city you reside in would determine if whether or not you need a business license.

The City of North Charleston Business License Ordinance calls for every person doing businesses within the city's corporate limits to obtain a license and pay an annual fee. While licenses can't be obtained online, the North Charleston city website has details on how to obtain your license.

You might also want to look into what the laws apply for your particular state, since they vary across state lines. A helpful resource to get you started is the South Carolina Business One Stop website ,where you can obtain licenses, permits, and registrations as well as helpful tips to get your business established and certified in your home state.  To top of page
