Dear John: Your local officials are eager to encourage local small businesses.

"We have professionals who do pro bono work and directors and counselors who have been business owners themselves, so they understands needs of the small business owner," says Kelly Manning, director of Colorado's Small Business Development Center, which operates alongside the state's office of economic development.

Manning advises entrepreneurs to register with the SBDC for free counseling and workshops. Next step: join your local Chamber of Commerce, a great place to network and make connections.

SCORE, an arm of the Small Business Administration, offers mentors that can help guide your business. Denver's local chapter provides free confidential counseling and low-cost workshops on an ongoing basis.

And because you concentrate on the Asian market, you should definitely check out Colorado International Trade Office. Established in 1983, the office offers free advice to businesses that engage in international trade.
