Don't miss these money savers
Deductions and credits that are often overlooked.
(Money Magazine) -- Moving costs. If you relocated for work, you may be able to write off unreimbursed expenses. Form 1040, Line 26
Energy-saving rehabs. You can take a credit of up to $500 total for 10% of the cost of qualifying green improvements such as insulation, windows, doors and roofs. Form 1040, Line 50
Good works. You can deduct 14¢ a mile, plus tolls and parking, if you traveled to help out a charity. Schedule A, Line 16
Good health. You can deduct medical costs that exceed 7.5% of your AGI. Adding in what you paid for contact lenses, glasses and acupuncture may help you clear that hurdle. A portion of long-term-care insurance premiums also qualify. Schedule A, Line 1
PMI. For tax year 2007 only (unless Congress extends this legislation), you may be able to deduct all or part of your private mortgage insurance premiums if you got your loan last year and your AGI is $110,000 or below. Schedule A, Line 13
Miscellany. You can deduct certain job and investment costs, including trade journals, safe-deposit-box rental and account fees, to the extent that they together top 2% of your AGI. Schedule A, Lines 21 to 23 ![]()
