Fuel prices still at record levels
The average price of unleaded gasoline remains at high, while diesel reaches new record, according to AAA survey.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Retail fuel prices remained at record levels overnight, a nationwide survey showed Tuesday.
The average price of regular unleaded gasoline held at a record $4.109 a gallon, unchanged from the previous day, according to motorist advocacy group AAA.
Gas prices have surged nearly 35% in the past year and have weighed on consumers and businesses alike.
Diesel fuel, which is used to power most trucks and commercial vehicles continued to outpace gasoline and rose 1.4 cents to hit a new high of $4.83 a gallon - nearly 64% higher than last year when diesel was cheaper than gas.
Drivers in Alaska, the state with the highest prices, saw gas rise by a penny to hit $4.644 a gallon. California comes in second at $4.51, down slightly from the day before. Hawaii meanwhile leads the nation in diesel prices at $5.378 a gallon.
South Carolina has the cheapest prices for regular unleaded at $3.906 a gallon, while Montana has the cheapest diesel at $4.609.
