(Fortune Magazine) -- Known in salon circles from the time she was 18, Sally Hershberger got the country's attention when she was asked to style First Lady Hillary Clinton's hair for a Vogue photo shoot. Ever since, Hershberger and her scissors have tamed the manes of Donna Karan, Nora Ephron, Jerry Bruckheimer, and even George and Laura Bush.

Now reaping from $600 to $800 for a snip job (including the Shagg do that made her famous), Hershberger zips between her two salons in New York City and one in Los Angeles, spending off-hours developing a new hair-product line. We chased her down for some tips on traveling light and on looking as if you had just left the salon.

1. Days on the road: 150 days a year.

2. Luggage lifesaver: I have no patience waiting for checked bags, so I put everything in my black Tumi or Louis Vuitton carryon and ship everything else in advance.

3. Favorite destinations: Aspen, the Hamptons, and Parrot Cay, the resort in Turks and Caicos. Although New York is my favorite city in the world, I like these three locales because when I'm there I don't bring my scissors. I ski in Aspen, spa at Parrot Cay, and in East Hampton, where I have a house, I water-ski and kayak.

4. Avoiding "plane hair": I always wash and blow-dry my hair before boarding. If my hair is long, I don't pull it back but keep it tucked behind my ear. Then I shake it free when I deplane, and it holds up well. Most of my male clients travel constantly; men do best when they have very short hair, cut with precision so it's evenly blended. That way it looks good in any climate, including on the plane.

5. Jet-lag tip: While everyone on the plane is watching a movie, I slip on headphones and meditate the whole way, sipping only water with lemon. I also bring one bag completely filled with magazines and can spend two hours doing nothing but reading.

6. Room service: I'm all about food and wine, so I almost never use room service. I want my meal as fresh and hot as possible. When I'm staying in a hotel, it's usually a Four Seasons, so I know the restaurant there will be excellent.

7. Fave feeding haunts: My gem place is the Waverly Inn in New York City. It's two blocks from my house, and I always know lots of people. In L.A., I like Jar for steak and Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica for Italian food.

8. Must-haves: I never travel without a Lainey cashmere scarf, even in the summer. I wear Blistex and chew Jols to combat the dryness. And I always wear my gold Rolex Daytona.

9. Top seats: I like to be seated only on the aisle in United's business-class section. Once it was my birthday, and the flight attendant tried to offer me an upgrade to first class. I didn't want it. United's business class just has the most comfortable seats I've ever found.  To top of page
