January, a great month to fly: report

By Aaron Smith

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- January was a great month to fly, with an exceptionally high rate of on-time arrivals, according to airline researcher FlightStats.

Last month, 77% of all flights in North America arrived on time, said FlightStats, which tracked performance in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

This was a marked improvement from December, when 71% of all flights arrived on-time. It was also a better performance than any January in any of the three years prior, said FlightStats.

The airline with the top performance last month was Hawaiian Airlines, with an on-time performance rate of 86.26%, followed by Horizon Air, at 86.11%. Horizon is part of Alaska Airlines, which had the third-best rate of 84.58%.

Of the legacy airlines, UAL Corp.'s (UAUA, Fortune 500) United Airlines, Delta Air Lines (DAL, Fortune 500) and Southwest Airlines (LUV, Fortune 500) all landed in the top 10, said FlightStats.

The airport with the best on-time performance was Oakland International Airport in California, with 86.44% of its flights arriving on time in January. This is in contrast to neighboring San Francisco International Airport, with a rate of 63.23%.

On average, airports in North America had an on-time average of 76.89%. To top of page
