NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Johnny Carson, the one-time king of late night television, has left more than $150 million to his foundation some five years after his death, according to an online report.
Carson left $156.5 million to the John W. Carson Foundation, according to the 2008 tax return posted by The Smoking Gun on its Web site on Monday.
The Smoking Gun said this dwarfs other annual contributions, which have ranged from $1 million to $2 million since the foundation was created in 1988. These donations were used to benefit environmental organizations, AIDS charities, schools, children's aid groups and not-for-profits in Nebraska, where Carson spent his formative years before settling in California.
Carson, host of NBC's "The Tonight Show" for nearly 30 years, died on Jan. 23, 2005 of emphysema at 79.
Carson, a longtime smoker, hosted the show from October 1, 1962 to May 22, 1992, when he passed the show to Jay Leno.
