NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Chrysler is recalling over 26,000 vehicles to inspect and repair power steering systems that could cause a fire.
The recall covers 2010 model year cars and trucks including the Chrysler 300 and Sebring, as well as Dodge models such as the Avenger, Challenger and Journey. It also applies to the 2011 Dodge Ram.
In a letter to federal safety regulators, Chrysler said some of these vehicles may have a break in the power steering mechanism that could allow fluid to leak out onto the engine and ignite.
The Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company said dealers will check the recalled vehicles and make necessary repairs free of charge. The recall, which covers 26,397 vehicles, will begin this month, the automaker said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating gas tanks on a estimated 3 million older Jeep Grand Cherokees that could pose a fire danger, although a recall has not been issued.
Chrysler, which makes Jeep, maintains that the gas tanks on Grand Cherokees made between 1993 and 2004 are safe. ![]()
