JERUSALEM (CNN) -- A suicide bomber killed five people and injured 35 others -- 14 seriously -- in an attack outside a shopping mall in the northern Israeli city of Netanya, police said Monday.

Regional Deputy Police Commander Avi Sasson said the bomber, who also died in the attack, was pulled from a security screening line outside the mall by police and a security guard when he detonated.

Video from the scene showed substantial damage to the building's facade and appeared to show at least two bodies covered in blankets. ( Watch eyewitness account -- 1:56)

The radical Palestinian group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.

In response, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told Israel Radio: "We will continue operating against the infrastructure of the Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank and Gaza Strip, without a time limit, and whatever it takes, whatever effort is required, we will do it."

Israeli security officials planned to meet to assess the situation later in the day.

"As long as these extremist terrorist groups remain armed, they will continue to kill innocent civilians and kill the chance for peace -- kill the chance of moving forward," said Mark Regev, a spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

"The Palestinian Authority has promised -- not just Israel -- the entire international community that it will start to disarm these groups to take the guns away from these extremist elements and, unfortunately, little has been achieved.

"We urge the Palestinian Authority to follow through on its commitment to disarm these killers."

Islamic Jihad dedicates itself to the creation of an Islamic Palestinian state and the destruction of Israel, and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat immediately condemned the attack on behalf of the Palestinian Authority.

"I believe that this harms Palestinian interests and is another act to sabotage efforts to revive the peace process and to sabotage the Palestinian elections," Erekat said. A parliamentary is scheduled for January.

In July, a suicide bomber at the same mall killed three Israelis. Islamic Jihad also claimed responsibility for that attack.
