Folksy West Virginian John Chambers has been CEO of this Internet equipment supplier since 1995 - and he's held the company together in the wake of the dot-com bubble burst.

When it comes to executive compensation, Cisco aims for the 75th percentile in its peer group. Virtually all employees are stockholders; happy ones in 2006, when Cisco shares soared 60 percent. On-site amenities include a barbershop, car wash and oil-change center and on-site child care that accommodates 490 children of employees.
