Wayland to Waveland (waylandtowaveland.org), started by residents of Wayland, Mass., began in October 2005 as a local volunteer initiative dedicated to providing long-term support to the Mississippi town of Waveland.
Since then, the organization has attracted volunteers from all over the Northeast and raised $75,000 to pay for supplies and materials for rebuilding efforts.
Last October, under the leadership of carpenter and entrepreneur Peter Bachman, 28 W2W volunteers helped rebuild the Waveland homes of three Katrina survivors in just 12 days. In addition to building, volunteers with expertise outside of construction helped the city in other ways, including reconstructing the mayor's computer network and leading art projects at a local elementary school.
W2W is currently looking for builders, skilled laborers and volunteers who can help the organization restore the homes of more Waveland families.
