Whether it's dealing with a hurricane insurer or filing for bankruptcy, law firms can volunteer their expertise and time to help small businesses solve Katrina-related legal problems. While some restrictions may apply to attorneys not licensed to practice in Katrina-affected states, lawyers may still be able to perform research and administrative duties through volunteer non-profits such as The Pro Bono Project (probono-no.org).
While the project generally focuses on civil matters, its executive director, Rachel Piercey, says that the organization works with non-profits that have business-related issues on a case-by-case basis.
