High-dollar green cars

The Robb Report, a magazine devoted to high-end luxuryitems, devotes a special issue to extreme green cars of all types.

At this year's Detroit Auto Show, Audi unveiled a version of its Q7 SUV powered by a monstrous, 12-cylinder diesel engine capable of producing 494 horsepower. Its estimated zero-to-60 time was about 5.5 seconds.

A 494-horsepower diesel may seem like an odd choice for a magazine issue devoted to "green cars," but the superpowered Q7 is part of Audi's plan to show that diesel doesn't mean "slow."

Last year, Audi's R10 race car won the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of LeMans because of its speed and because of its diesel engine's fuel economy, which meant fewer refueling stops.

The V12 SUV was shown as a concept vehicle, but Audi plans to begin selling a V6 diesel-powered Q7 for the 2008 model year. It will have the same Bluetec emission-cleaning technology used in Mercedes-Benz diesels.
