The new xB: Scion's icon loses rough edges

The new xB, on sale now, is more powerful and smoother-riding. But Scion was known for not appealing to everyone.

The xB's straight-line row of gauges includes a digital speedometer. As before, the gauges are mounted in the center of the dash.
Speaking in strictly practical terms, there seems to be little about the xB that isn't better than the outgoing car. Its fuel economy is slightly lower but still excellent for a vehicle with this much utility.

Scion executives insist that they are absolutely not trying to appeal to a new or different demographic. They still want to sell cars to trend-setting young people in urban areas.

Nevertheless, even the current Scion xB manages to find buyers outside of that narrow demographic. A lot of people can find a reason to buy a fuel-efficient vehicle with SUV-style utility. With its quieter, smoother ride, more stable handling and more storage space, it's hard to believe the new Scion xB won't reach outside the ranks even more.
