Green cars from the Frankfurt Motor Show

At the European auto show, car makers are showing off plans for fuel-sipping cars of the future as well as a few for today.

Volkswagen Up! concept
The Up is a tiny, two-door Volkswagen with a rear-mounted engine. Yes, just like the old days.

The response of Frankfurt Motor Show visitors "will be a decisive test to determine whether the concept has the same kind of potential possessed by the Beetle at one time or by the Golf today," said Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, VW board member, in a company announcement.

Putting the engine in the back allowed greater interior space, according to VW. For even more flexibility, all the Up's passenger seats can be folded and removed to allow more cargo space.

The instrument panel has two central displays. One, an 8-inch monitor, shows things like speed, fuel level and C02 emissions. A smaller monitor can be used to control various functions through touch or, through an integrated motion sensor, a gesture.
