Newest little Scion comes up short

Beyond its funky looks, the xD is a rather ordinary little economy car but not much more.

When driving the xD you feel as if you're perched up high in the car and reaching down to use the steering and gear selector.
Quirky gauges are a Scion specialty. In the case of xD, instead of a separate speedometer and tachometer, the two are combined in a single circular dial. Two-thirds of the dial is the speedometer. The bottom-right third is the tachometer.

The gauges are situated where you'd usually expect them, in front of the driver's face. In the xB, the gauges are in the center of the dashboard, to the right of the driver.

I actually would have preferred that in the xD. The driving position in this car feels so high up that when I looked down at the speedometer, I felt like I was looking at my lap.

Likewise, the floor-mounted gearshift lever, or gear selector in the automatic version, is way down there. It's especially inconvenient with the manual transmission, which had me constantly reaching down next to my right thigh. Even with the automatic transmission, though, the selector felt awkward to use.
