Newest little Scion comes up short

Beyond its funky looks, the xD is a rather ordinary little economy car but not much more.

Design
The xD looks like a little brother to the larger xB wagon.
Design
Base prices: $14.5500 to $15,300
Seating: Four in reasonable comfort, five maximum
Fuel mileage: 29 mpg overall with manual transmission, according to new EPA testing method
Power: 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission

The new Scion xD looks very much like a smaller version of its new big brother, the redesigned Scion xB.

Obviously, the xDs "chunk of steel" design isn't going to appeal to everyone - or even most people - but it's not supposed to. Scion is Toyota's carefully cultivated low-cost niche brand. If everybody likes it, it's not cool, is it?

But that only works if, underneath the edgy looks, there's a great little car waiting to be discovered. In this case, there's a decent compact car with a few interesting features but not much else to brag about.
