New Cadillac CTS: Superb performance

The redesigned 2008 Cadillac CTS is everything a 21st century Cadillac should be.

Base prices: $32,245 to $34,545

Well equipped: $44,000

Fuel mileage: 20 mpg overall, according to new EPA testing method

Power: 3.6-liter V6, 6-speed manual or automatic transmission

It would be easy to say the redesigned 2008 Cadillac CTS is the best Cadillac yet. Of course it is. What would be the point, otherwise?

But the new CTS isn't just the best Cadillac yet. It's very nearly the best Cadillac one could imagine.

The CTS looks good outside and stunning inside. The ride is smooth and supple, but the handling is firm and aggressive when needed. My test car was the CTS DI, which stands for for Direct Injection. This the moderately sporty CTS, tuned midway between luxury and full-on performance. The engine is powerful but smooth with a surprisingly nice note for a V6.

As befits a Cadillac, there is plenty of technology inside the CTS but, in contrast to most luxury cars today, its technology is unobtrusive, attractively presented and easy to use.
