New Malibu a game changer

The redesigned 2008 Chevrolet Malibu is an American mid-sized sedan that can compete at the top.

We also had the opportunity to do some highway-speed cruising along a two-lane stretch of road capped at each end by deeply banked turnaround circles.

This is where we got to experience the new laminated window glass that GM representatives had shown us earlier. It's actually made of two glass layers with a layer of crystal-clear rubber sandwiched between them.

The result, with other engineering to isolate noise and vibrations, is the sort of hushed ride you'd usually find in a much more expensive car, even when passing cars driving 70 miles per hour in the opposite direction.

The silence was even more impressive in the cheaper 4-cylinder-powered Malibu and the Malibu Hybrid.

I wasn't so surprised that the Malibu was able to beat the Camry in handling. Handling isn't a strong point for Toyota's sedan. The difference in noise at highway speeds was really unexpected, though. Keeping in mind that the Camry probably hadn't been as meticulously maintained as the brand-new Malibu, the Malibu's performance was still striking.
