50 years of Toyota in the U.S.

On October 31, 1957, Toyota officially opened for business in the United States. The American auto business hasn't been the same since.

The HiLux was the third truck Toyota introduced to the United States. The first was a pick-up version of the Land Cruiser introduced here in 1963. Then there was the Stout, which arrived in 1964.

The HiLux name was dropped in the United States during the 1970s, although it's still used overseas. For most of its life, Toyota's small half-ton pick-up was simply known as "the Toyota truck" here in the states.

A four-wheel-drive version in 1979 quickly became famous for its rugged durability and relatively nice interior.

As Toyota introduced new, larger trucks in the 1990s, it became necessary to give the Toyota truck its own name again. In the United States, it's now called the Tacoma.
