Chrysler plugs in to electrics

Chrysler will unveil three electrically driven concept vehicles at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January.

In a typical fuel-economy test cycle, the Renegade would get 110 miles per gallon of diesel fuel, Chrysler says. It could run up to 40 miles on pure electricity, burning no fuel at all. Its small diesel engine would turn on after that to generate more electricity and recharge the batteries.

This is a two-seat vehicle, smaller than today's Jeep Compass, designed to be built from the smallest amount of material possible, further minimizing its environmental impact.

Inside, the interior would use "eco-friendly" materials, Trevor Creed, Chrysler's lead designer, said in a video announcement presented with the sketches.
