Nine months before the IPO, Isilon execs went on a road show and visited investors with deep experience in its field. The company also invited key analysts out to its Seattle headquarters for one-on-one meetings, hoping to build relationships that would last beyond the day of the IPO.

"Now the analysts really know what makes us tick," Goldman says. "I think that's one of the single most important things we did."
