Initially, Toughbook battery life wasn't a problem for Panasonic; its customers were used to carrying heavier laptops anyway, so a big battery worked fine. But as more mainstream workers sought rugged units, the company developed a model that gets 10 hours of battery life and weighs just 3.5 pounds.
