After profit growth of 39.2% in 2005, Shell opted to increase its capital spending by 40% last year, expanding its fields in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico, exploring tar sands in Canada, and building a new deep-water drill off the coast of Brazil. Overall profits grew just 0.5% in 2006.
