All in the families

Private equity firms and REITs may be charging into commercial real estate, but these multigenerational clans still control huge chunks of New York City's iconic skyline. Photographs by Lamia Maria Abillama

The Trumps

Love him or hate him, you can't deny the awesome ubiquity of the Donald -- or his buildings. Trump may be associated with Manhattan luxury, but it all began in Brooklyn, where his late father, Fred, started a construction business in 1921. Trump has taken branding to its purest form: Many of the buildings with his name on it are mostly funded by outside investors, and his stakes are hard to discern. Still he expands: Trump Place -- seven buildings on Manhattan's Upper West Side -- is slated to grow to 16. And Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric have become his latest apprentices, officially in charge of planning projects from Chicago to Dubai. "As long as my kids enjoy the business and keep doing a good job," says Donald, "they'll be running my company someday."
