6 U.S. toy makers profit after the China recalls

Small companies see sales increases as customers scrutinize their purchases.

The classic Slinky has been selling fast. Ray Dallavecchia, CEO of its manufacturer, Poof-Slinky, believes this is a direct result of the recent China recalls. The toy, made in Hollidaysburg, Pa. since 1943, has a built-in crimp at the ends of the wire to ensure safe play. Chinese knock-offs rarely have this feature, putting them at a disadvantage in today's marketplace, he says. To capitalize on shoppers' concerns about unsafe imports, Poof-Slinky is redesigning the packaging of the Slinky, enlarging the American flag and adding a "Made-in-USA" logo.
