These Zealot skis, which won Powder Magazine's Skier's Choice award, are built using strong-but-lightweight Scandinavian poplar wood and fiberglass, and are engineered to glide along powered or packed snow. Professional mountain climber Peter Metcalf, 51, was the general manager of the company before he purchased it out of bankruptcy in 1989 and renamed it Black Diamond. The Salt Lake City business sells its skies at more than 500 sports outlets in North America, including REI and Eastern Mountain Sports.
