Money Magazine put together a panel of women ages 20 to 70 to sample 5 popular Valentine's Day chocolates. Taste and presentation were considered, along with value.
Whitman's: 32-ounce Sampler, $23.99
Whitman's: 32-ounce Sampler, $23.99
Grade: C
What it includes: This 69-piece box has it all: cashew clusters, coconut creams, toffee chips - you name it.
Price per piece: 35 cents
Signature piece: The Whitman messenger boy, a portrait of a courier in chocolate
Taste: These commercial-grade bon bons are more reminiscent of candy bars (Mounds, Heath) than fine chocolate.
Presentation: As classic as you can get. If the Smithsonian ever had a chocolate exhibit, this box would be front and center.
The bottom line: Maybe a gift from Whitman's doesn't say you spent a lot of money, but it does say, "Here's a lot of chocolate."
