When you need the original: If you're applying for a mortgage or other loan, a lender may want to see your return to verify your income.

And of course, if you're audited, you'll need copies of your past three returns - and you'll want them pronto.

How to replace it: You can order a partial or full return for any of the past seven years from irs.gov.

Cost: $39 for a copy of the full tax return.
