Detroit auto show: Cars of the future

Some wild - and some not so wild - ideas from the major auto manufacturers.

The Land Rover LRX offers a glimpse of a sleeker, more car-like future for Land Rover, the luxury off-road brand that Ford is now in the process of selling off.

Described as a cross-coupe, the 2-door LRX is smaller than Land Rover's current small offering, the LR2. Despite its radical shape, the LRX retains important L:and Rover styling cues such as the clamshell hood and "floating" roof.

Light weight and reduced aerodynamic drag contribute to substantial gains in fuel economy, Land Rover boasts. The SUV has an "Eco" mode button that reduces emissions in urban driving.

Different interior lighting colors correspond to different driving modes: Red for "sporty," green for "Eco" and blue in standard mode.

Various steps were taken to save weight in the vehicle including replacing window glass with polycarbonate a type of strong clear plastic.
